ATIPP Act
The Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act, 2015 (the ATIPP Act) is legislated by the Provincial Government and designed to create a culture of openness and accountability in the public sector while protecting the personal information of citizens and the commercially sensitive information of businesses. It applies to all public bodies including municipalities.
The ATIPP Act has three purposes:
- To ensure that citizens have the information required to participate meaningfully in the democratic process.
- To increase transparency in government and public bodies so that elected officials, officers, and employees of public bodies remain accountable.
- To protect the privacy of individuals with respect to personal information about themselves held and used by public bodies.
The City of St. John’s recognizes the public’s right to access records within its custody and control as an essential function of an accountable and transparent government in compliance with the Act. The City of St. John’s is also committed to protecting personal information and all personal information may only be collected, used, and disclosed in accordance with the Act.
