Our City, Our Future
Our City Our Future was created to shape and direct the City's strategic decisions. It sets out a long-term vision for St. John's as a progressive city, shaped by its geography and history, where people want to live and feel they belong.
The vision and the strategic directions are the drivers for change, and they provide the foundation for the plan. The four directions are pillars, each one including goals that translate into specific strategic actions every year. The directions are designed to be longer term, for a period of ten years, with the goals designed for the life of Council. Each new Council will review and adjust the goals to reflect emerging and changing priorities. The City identifies strategic activities through a departmental planning process which results in an annual action plan. The City will report on the progress of the plan online.
2021 Plan Review and Update
As per the City's strategic planning framework, the directions and goals of the plan are to be reviewed with each term of Council. Accordingly, the first plan review was completed in late 2021. This review included consultation with Council, management, and staff and was informed by the results of the City's Citizen Satisfaction Survey conducted in November of 2020. The review reconfirmed the plan’s four strategic directions first adopted in 2019 and recommended the addition of two new goals and the modification of an existing goal to reflect the work the City is undertaking in the areas of climate adaptation and service excellence. These revisions, approved by Council on April 4, 2022, will help strengthen the plan and bring focus to the City’s work over the course of the term of Council. More information on the plan review and the updated goals are available in the revised publication, Our City Our Future - Strategic Plan 2019-2029 | City of St. John's (stjohns.ca)
