Debbie Hanlon was first elected to the St. John’s City Council in 2008 as Ward 4 Councillor in a by-election; and was then re-elected to this position the following term of 2009 - 2013. After a brief hiatus from city politics, in 2017 she was successful in securing a Councillor at Large seat on Council, a position which commands a broader scope of the city’s issues allowing her to do more.

Debbie served as chair of the Economic Development and Tourism Committee and Chair of the City’s Strategic Economic Roadmap Committee, Chair of the Audit Committee, as well as co-chair of seniors committees and other various boards. During her first two years this term she appointed to lead the Transportation portfolio, Audit and Accountability Standing Committee, Cruise Committee, and the Downtown St. John’s Committee. Just recently she has been appointed the new lead for Tourism, Culture and a brand new portfolio, Immigration, as well as lead for Cruise Committee, Downtown St John's Board and the Arts Advisory Committee.

She is proud of her 25 year history of successful entrepreneurship in the City of St. John's which was recognized by her being named one of the top female entrepreneurs in Canada, a three-time Top 50 Atlantic Canadian CEO as awarded by Atlantic Business Magazine. Ms. Hanlon is also a published children’s author. Continued community involvement is a passion which is evident through her Tae Kwon Do instruction and involvement in many volunteer boards.

Debbie was born in Chance Cove, NL but moved to St. John’s at the age of 12. A single mother to three children, Trevor, Justin and Samantha, she now also enjoys two grandchildren, Sawyer and Frank.
