Electrical Permits and Inspections

Electrical Application Form together with pieces of electrical equipment The Electrical Inspection staff are responsible for enforcing the Electrical By-Law and the Canadian Electrical Code, to ensure that the wiring, connections, fixtures and equipment in all buildings are installed and maintained in a safe operating condition.

All electrical work carried out in the City of St. John’s must be performed by qualified Journeymen Electricians, licensed by the City of St. John’s under approved permit to do so.

Permits for all electrical work can only be issued to Electrical Contractors, licensed by the City of St. John’s; that is, individuals and/or companies who employ a Journeymen Electrician with a least two years of experience as a Journeyman Electrician with Interprovincial Qualifications.

Inspections of work performed are carried out at various stages of construction to monitor progress, as well as on the repair or renovation of electrical work in existing buildings.

It is the homeowners/business owners responsibility to ensure that work is performed only by those authorized to do so, as outlined above, and that the appropriate permit(s) are obtained.
