Plumbing Permits and Inspections

plumbing permit with pipe fittingsThe plumbing inspection staff are responsible for enforcing the City of St. John’s Plumbing Bylaw. This Bylaw has been established to provide minimum standards for the design and installation of plumbing systems in residential, commercial and industrial premises throughout the City and as such, protects the public health.

All plumbing work carried out in the City of St. John’s must be performed by qualified Journeymen Plumbers, licensed by the City of St. John’s under approved permit to do so.

Permits for all plumbing work can only be issued to Plumbing Contractors, licensed by the City of St. John’s; that is, individuals and/or companies who employ a Journeymen Plumber with a least 2 years of experience as a Journeyman Plumber with Interprovincial Qualifications.

Inspections of work performed are carried out at various stages of construction to monitor progress, as well as, on the repair or renovation of plumbing work in existing buildings.

It is the homeowners/business owners responsibility to ensure that work is performed only by those authorized to do so, as outlined above, and that the appropriate permit(s) are obtained.
