About St John's

Downtown St. John's with a view of the harbour. The City of St. John's is Canada's most easterly city and the capital city of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.  St. John's is the main commercial, financial, educational and cultural centre for the province and the location of the seat of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.   The City extends out from a century-old urban core to include suburban developments, shopping complexes and industrial sites, equipped with all the conveniences of a growing, progressive metropolitan centre.  About one-third of Newfoundland's population lives in the St. John's and surrounding area.

Because of its sheltered harbour and proximity to the fishing grounds of the North Atlantic, St. John's was initially a commercial trading outpost for Europeans engaged in the fishing industry. While the fishery is still important, today the City is known as the main service centre for the province's offshore oil and gas industry.  St. John's is also recognized for its vibrant arts and cultural community.
