Ski & Snowshoe

During the winter season the City of St. John’s Recreation Division operates a Winter Activity Centre, located at Pippy Park in the North Bank Lodge. Pippy Park offers classic cross country skiing and snowshoeing for all ages.

New this year, Family and Adult Ski Lessons are being offered. For more information or to register search the course title at RECconnect.


Ski Trails

In winter the Pippy Park campground is transformed into an area suitable for snowshoeing and cross country skiing, both classic and skate skiing, at no cost! Trails are lit for evening use.

Days of operation are weather dependent and based on snow cover. Call the info line at 709-737-3651 for updated facility operations.

Ski and Snowshoe Equipment Rental Prices:

 - Individual person; $5
 - Family of three people; $10
 - Family of four to six people; $15

 

Payment is accepted by cash, debit and credit at Pippy Park. Identification is required to rent skis and snowshoes.

Per Public Heath Guidelines anyone aged 19 and over will be required to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination and identification upon entry in any City of St. John’s Recreation Facility or program.

Staff will scan the QR code on the NLVaxPass or review the printed proof of vaccination. In both cases proof of ID with a photo must be given. Proof of vaccination will be required for every entry to one of our facilities, not just the first visit. The public are reminded that mask are required when visiting City facilities and social distancing measures are still in place.

PLEASE NOTE: NLVaxPass is NOT required to ski or snowshoe at the park if you are NOT required to enter the facility.

Adaptive Equipment

Adaptive Outdoor Recreation Equipment improves access to the City’s trails, parks, beaches, arenas, and recreation programs for those with mobility related disabilities.

This free, lending service is based on availability and reservation.

The City’s current inventory includes:

  • 2 Ice sledges for use on ice surfaces
  • 2 Hippocampe All-Terrain Wheelchairs (with optional ski attachments) for multi-terrain use
  • 1 Snow Coach Adapted Slide for use on snow
  • 1 Sit Ski for use on cross country ski trails at the Pippy Park Winter Activity Centre only
  • Coming Soon! 1 Top End Excelorator Handcycle for use on most solid, hard packed surfaces when weather and conditions permit
