Sidewalk Maintenance

Block of Sidewalk in the Process of Being ReplacedSidewalk maintenance includes new installation and repair of existing concrete sidewalk, curb and gutter.

The sidewalk contract goes to public tender every May with work starting in June. There is a limited amount of funding per year, so the amount of sidewalk that is repaired greatly depends upon the unit prices of the awarded tender. The initial priority is to repairing sidewalk which was damaged or removed because of residential water or sewer pipe repairs performed by City crews. The remaining sidewalk list is scheduled on a priority basis with hazardous situations completed first. Large maintenance projects are generally deferred to capital works budgets and are done under the Street Rehabilitation Program.

Temporary repair of concrete sidewalks with asphalt may occur during the winter months or at the end of a season to eliminate immediate hazards.

It should be noted that all work performed on City streets by non-City crews requiring the cutting of the asphalt surface, curb or sidewalk requires a Street Excavation Permit.

To report a hazardous sidewalk condition, please call Access St. John's at 311 or (709) 754-CITY (2489). Access St. John's is available to take your call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
