Pedestrian Crosswalks

Pedestrian Crosswalks are locations identified on the street by signage and pavement markings as safe places to cross where motorists must yield the right of way to pedestrians. They are only installed at locations where the volume of pedestrians crossing and the lack of safe gaps in traffic warrant the installation of a crosswalk.    

How do you cross at a crosswalk?
When crossing any roadway in the City of St. John's you should always try to use locations where there are stop signs, traffic signals or crosswalks. Before proceeding into the roadway always look both ways to ensure all vehicles have stopped. Drivers must yield the right of way to pedestrians, but you should always make sure that they see you and have stopped their vehicles before starting to cross. Once all vehicles have stopped you should proceed across the road as quickly as possible.

How are crosswalks installed?
When assessing new crosswalk locations the Traffic Division uses the Transportation Association of Canada's Pedestrian Crossing Control Manual. Criteria that is considered includes the number of pedestrians crossing, the volume of traffic and the visibility of the location. The City only installs crosswalks that are warranted under this criteria.
