Today, during Committee of the Whole, Council was presented with the new Bike St. John’s Master Plan for discussion and review. The plan articulates a vision for the future of cycling in St. John’s; provides an action plan and roadmap to achieve the vision; and, highlights a backbone cycling network that prioritizes three catalyst projects for early implementation.

“We heard through public engagement that people want bike routes that are safe, comfortable and well connected,” said Councillor Dave Lane. “The plan delivers on all of this, and is well researched, thoughtful, and practical. It supports all modes of active transportation and aims to build a network that accommodates everyone - people who like to walk, people using strollers, walking-aids, scooters, wheelchairs, and bikes.”

The plan is the result of a collaborative process where a consultant team worked with City staff, the Bike St. John’s Advisory Committee, and included feedback from over 1,000 members of the public.

“To help build a cycling friendly culture this plan outlines a network of trails that will serve people of all ages and abilities. It builds on pre-existing infrastructure and trailways to connect our city neighbourhoods in a safe and efficient manner,” said Councillor Lane.

The vision statement for the plan commits to a safe, inclusive, and convenient cycling network that is well-connected, attractive and reflective of the city’s unique topography and climate. As part of an integrated mobility network, this is supported by policies and programs that promote a cycling-friendly culture.

It is expected that infrastructure will be implemented over many years as opportunities arise and funding is allocated. City Council will vote for final approval of the proposed plan at a future council meeting. For further details on the Bike Plan see the backgrounder or visit engagestjohns.ca.

The City of St. John’s is committed to building a balanced transportation network to get people and goods where they want to go safely. This Bike St. John’s Master Plan is identified in the Our City, Our Future 2019 Action Plan under the goal to expand and maintain a safe and accessible active transportation network.
