Black Lives Matter

Thursday, June 04, 2020 - 1:15 PM

St. John's City Council respects the peaceful demonstrations that are bringing attention to systemic racism in our society.

Canada is a multicultural society where we recognize the value and dignity of Canadians of all races and ethnic groups, languages and religions. But, unfortunately, that does not mean racism does not impact our society and communities. We know that racism exists in our community, and we must guard against that if we are to be a truly just and welcoming municipality.

We are proud of our growing multicultural identity in St. John's and our community is better for it. Connecting with and embracing different cultures helps us not only better understand one another but also strengthens our city by bringing new perspectives, new ideas and new experiences.

It is important for us as a City to state categorically that Black Lives Matter.

Please stand up against racism in your neighbourhoods. Stand against intolerance of others who are ethnically, racially, or religiously different from you and your family and encourage your children to do the same.

As your Council, we will continue to keep Canada's value of anti-racism and multiculturalism as a guiding principle in our policy and decision making.
