Today, representatives from the City of St. John’s, the Bowring Park Foundation, Government of Canada, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, VOCM Cares Foundation, United Way NL and members of the public attended the grand opening of the new pool house in Bowring Park.

“Today is a very exciting day for the City and especially the children and residents of the region who have been patiently awaiting the opening of this new pool house,” said Dennis O’Keefe, Mayor of the City of St. John’s. “The new facility is fully accessible and family oriented and we are very happy to mark the opening with our funding partners and board members of the Bowring Park Foundation.”

The total cost of the facility is $4.3 million of which the City of St. John's has contributed $2.2 million, the Provincial Government of Newfoundland and Labrador contributed $1.1 million, the Government of Canada, through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) contributed $ 200,000. The Bowring Park Foundation has raised $800,000 with support from the United Way and VOCM Cares among many other generous donors.

The facility has enhanced washrooms and change rooms, including family change rooms. The pool remains the same size and shape with a new deck and terrace area. A new Portable Aquatic Lift has been recently installed in the pool.

“I'm delighted to announce that through ACOA, the government of Canada is contributing $200,000 to the Bowring Park Pool House,” said Seamus O’Regan, Member of Parliament, St.John’s South Mount Pearl. “I'm sure many families and small children have been looking forward to this day. I hope that the weather cooperates so the facility can be used to the fullest! If you're looking for something to do this summer, drop down to Bowring Park, one of our city's crown jewels, and enjoy the many things it has to offer including the new pool house"

“The upgrading of the pool house was identified as a high priority by the Bowring Park Foundation in 2005,” said Ashley Power-Stack, Chair of the Bowring Park Foundation. “We are thrilled to see the Pool House facility come to life! The Midstream Area is one of the most popular areas in Bowring Park and it ensures children of all ages have a beautiful, welcoming space to be active all year round. The Foundation gratefully acknowledges its partners in the pool house project, the City of St. John’s, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, ACOA, VOCM Cares Foundation and United Way NL.”
