Call for Nominations

In accordance with Section 14(5) of the Municipal Elections Act, SNL 2001, c.M-20-2, as amended, notice is hereby given that Aug. 20, 21, 22, 23, 26, and 27, are the days on which nomination of Candidates for Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Ward Councillors, and Councillors-at-Large for the Sept. 24, 2013 St. John’s Municipal Election will take place.

Nominations shall be in writing and state the name and residence of the candidate and shall be signed by the proposer and seconder, both of whom shall be present together with the candidate, who shall also sign signifying his or her acceptance. The proposer and seconder must be eligible to vote in this election, which means they have to be a Canadian citizen, 18 years of age or older and residents of the City of St. John’s for the 30 days immediately preceding election day.

Every candidate for election to Council shall, at the time of his or her nomination, pay a non-refundable nomination fee of fifty dollars ($50).

Candidate Qualification
Pursuant to Section 15 of the Municipal Elections Act, SNL 2001, c.M-20-2, as amended, a person is qualified to be nominated as a candidate for Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Ward Councillor, or Councillor-at-Large if he or she is:

a. A Canadian Citizen, 18 years of age or older and eligible to vote in an election in the City of St. John’s; and
b. Not in arrears of taxes or other charges payable to the municipality of St. John’s; and
c. Ordinarily resident in the City of St. John’s for a period of 30 days before the commencement of the nomination period or resident in an area that, on Election Day, is part of the City of St. John’s.
