The City of St. John's will spend over $21 million in its 2012 Capital Budget, which was approved at its City Council meeting on Jan. 30.

"We have some significant projects being funded through the 2012 Capital, which are being financed solely by the City of St. John's," says Mayor Dennis O'Keefe. "We also have numerous additional projects which we hope to move forward with through cost-sharing agreements with the other levels of government in 2012."

Some of the highlights of the 2012 Capital Budget include:

  • $3.2 million for upgrading Main Road, Goulds
  • $2.9 million for equipment replacement
  • $4.3 million for street rehabilitation
  • $1.4 million for Sanitary Sewer Diversion on Pine Bud Place
  • $500,000 for sidewalk replacement
  • $450,000 for three sidewalk plows
  • $440,000 to clean exterior of City Hall
  • $200,000 for Wedgewood Park Design Concept Plan

There are additional funds allocated for various water and wastewater projects, as well as improvements to recreation infrastructure in locations throughout the City.

"It is important that we continue to invest in the City's infrastructure," says Ward 1 councillor Danny Breen, Chair of the Finance and Administration Standing Committee. "I am very pleased that we have been able to address so much in this year's capital budget and we will continue to work towards securing funding from the other levels of government to address the growing infrastructure needs of our City."
