City streets will be busy again this construction season after the City approved $12.7 million for its annual street rehabilitation program.

“It is important that we work to maintain our streets on an ongoing basis because it is much more cost effective to patch a street than it is to have to completely rebuild a road,” says Ward 5 Councillor Wally Collins, Chair of the Public Works, Environment and Protection Standing Committee. “Each year we try to maximize the amount of work we can complete and we have a very extensive list of roads which will be worked on this year.”

The street rehabilitation program includes:

  • Grind and patch operations
  • Cut and patch operations
  • Full road paving

The full list of streets scheduled for street rehabilitation can be found online.

“We understand that during the summer it can be frustrating for residents who experience traffic delays as a result of construction activity, but it is very important that we complete as much work as possible during our province’s short construction season,” adds Councillor Collins. “I urge residents to stay in touch with us through our website and social media as we will be posting on a weekly basis where we will be completing road work.”

Residents can stay advised as to where we are completing street rehabilitation by visiting our website at www.stjohns.ca. Information will be posted on a weekly basis. Residents should note that roadwork is very weather dependent and while every effort will be made to provide an accurate list scheduling changes do occur with little to no notice at times based on weather conditions.

The City would like to remind residents to please drive with caution when travelling through construction zones and respect all posted signage and flag persons.
