City Council Approves BikeFest

Monday, July 23, 2018 - 5:15 PM

Today, City Council voted to approve BikeFest, a one‐day downtown street festival to celebrate and promote cycling and active transportation in St. John’s. The event is scheduled for Sunday, September 16 on Water Street between Beck’s Cove and Bishop’s Cove from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“We are excited to be teaming up with Happy City St. John’s to plan this one-day event in the heart of downtown,” said Councillor Dave Lane, lead of the Bike St. John’s Advisory Committee. “In addition to bringing the cycling community together this event provides a chance to celebrate the walkability of our downtown and the local businesses that make it vibrant.”

Highlights of the event include a guided bike ride on the T’Railway for riders of all‐ages and abilities, an obstacle course for young cyclists, bike maintenance, education and information.

“BikeFest is the first event of its kind in St. John’s,” said Rob Nolan, Chair, Happy City St. John’s. “It’s a great opportunity to bring experienced cyclists, novices, and those who have never been on a bicycle out to learn more about how to make the most of cycling in St. John’s.”

The festival activities will require a temporary road closure and traffic control in the area of Water Street. Further details will be announced as we get closer to the event.
