City Rental Units Available for Immediate Occupancy

The Non-Profit Housing Division has vacancies in its low-end-of-market housing available for immediate occupancy, particularly in three and four bed units.

Currently about 19% of units are vacant.

“In our city the job of finding adequate, affordable housing can be difficult for people, no matter their income,” explained Deputy Mayor Sheilagh O’Leary, Council lead on Affordable Housing. “Our goal is to help people live comfortably and well – to not only survive, but to thrive – and our lower end of market housing units may help individuals and families do just that.”

St. John’s has 476 units throughout the City that are available as non-profit housing to individuals who pass income testing for qualification. Individuals and families that would benefit the most will be those typically making $40,000 to $50,000 annually who are caught in the “housing crunch” between affordability and access. Rent is charged at a fixed rate based on a percentage of income or 25%, whichever is greater, which makes the housing not only affordable, but attainable.

“Our units are well-maintained, well-located units in neighbourhoods throughout the city,” said Deputy Mayor O’Leary. “These rentals are in place for any individual who finds themselves between affordability and attainability. Many individuals struggle to afford a nice place to raise or care for a family, and the City can help those who fall in that gap.”

The City is launching a campaign - Opening the Right Door Can Change Your Life - to advertise these rentals and fill vacancies. Individuals interested in applying for one of these rentals or who would like more information on what the City offers through Non-Profit Housing can email housing@stjohns.ca or call the department at 576-8196 or Access St. John’s at 311 (754-CITY).

Providing low-end-of-market housing options is a goal of the 2018 Affordable Housing Strategy, a ten-year plan to  address our municipality’s housing needs, developed with the vision of working in-step with partners, stakeholders and residents to create and maintain safe, suitable, and affordable housing throughout the city.
