City Tourism Awards Announced
The City of St. John's, Department of Economic Development, Tourism & Culture, is celebrating Tourism Awareness Week with the presentation of the 21st annual City of St. John's Tourism Awards.
"Tourism Week is an annual celebration that heightens the knowledge of tourism and its economic impact on the province, as well as the City of St. John's," says Ward 3 Councillor Bruce Tilley, Chair, Economic Development and Tourism Standing Committee. "There could be no better time for us to acknowledge the contributions of local individuals and organizations that have helped make St. John's a destination of choice for tourists, cruise ships and conventions."
To highlight the importance of the tourism industry to the City, we presented the 21st annual City of St. John's Tourism Awards on Tuesday, June 19 in five different categories. These Awards recognize the contributions of local people to the growth and development of the industry. The Awards were presented by Mayor Dennis O'Keefe on Tuesday, June 19 at 4 p.m. in Council Chambers.
"This is always one of the highlights of my year," says Mayor O'Keefe. "There are so many deserving people and organizations to honour, which is an excellent indication of how strong the tourism industry is in St. John's."
The 2012 Awards were presented to:
- Legend Award: Brenda B. Walsh
- Event of the Year Award: 27th Annual George Street Festival
- Signal Award (cruise): Jack Fagan
- Destination St. John's Award of Distinction (convention): 144th General Council Meeting of the Canadian Medical Association (CMA)
- Victoria Wagon (taxi driver): Eric Barron
St. John's hosted 1,131,000 visitors in 2011. These visitors spent $362.4 million throughout the local economy.
