Construction Begins on the New Kenmount Terrace Community Park

At a ceremonial sod turning event on Friday, August 11, officials from the City of St. John’s were joined by representative of the provincial Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and members of the Kenmount Terrace community to celebrate a major milestone, as construction of the $10 million Kenmount Terrace Community Park will soon be underway.
 
“Once complete, this purpose-built recreation facility and park will feature something for all ages,” said Mayor Dennis O’Keefe. “Having access to modern recreation facilities and green space will enhance the quality of life for residents of Kenmount Terrace and will improve the City’s ability to provide recreation programming to residents throughout the City.”
 
The City’s engagement process for the park began in 2015 and included the creation of a steering committee, a public workshop and survey, focus groups with Elementary and Junior High students, a skate park focus group, and social media campaign, followed by the release of a ‘What we Heard’ document and multiple in-person information sessions to share the concept design with community members.
 
“I am overjoyed to be here today to witness this eagerly awaited event in the community of Kenmount Terrace,” said Sheilagh O’Leary, Ward 4 Councillor. “Since this project began the City of St. John's has been actively engaged with residents. Today we celebrate this event with them, and the entire community.”
 
Kenmount Terrace Community Park will include a multi-use community centre with full sized gymnasium, two multipurpose rooms and a kitchen. The outdoor park will include playground areas, splash pad, basketball court, skate park, dog park and a walking trail.
 
The $10 million Park is being cost shared equally between the provincial government and the City of St. John’s. This project supports the City's strategic direction of ‘Neighbourhoods Build our City’ which includes a goal to create parks and places for people and to improve neighbourhood level services.
