The City of St. John’s is pleased to announce the selection of artwork for permanent placement on the exterior façade of the St. John’s Convention Centre. The two-dimensional image (approximately 17 meters wide and 9 meters high) will be incorporated on the Water Street side of the new building using a method that recreates the original image through the manipulation of coin-sized discs cut into aluminum panels.

The artwork, titled Aftermath (cracking up), was created by Newfoundland-based painter and book artist Tara Bryan. Ms. Bryan operates Walking Bird Press and has exhibited at galleries throughout North America and Europe, including The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery in St. John’s. Ms. Bryan holds a Master of Fine Arts in Painting.

Through a Request for Proposals earlier this year, a total of 31 images were submitted for consideration and reviewed by a selection committee.

“We are delighted to display this piece of artwork in such a prominent location in St. John’s where it can be appreciated by residents and visitors alike,” said Councillor Sandy Hickman, Chair of the City’s Arts Advisory Committee. “We requested an image that demonstrated artistic excellence, was representative of our city and province and was timeless and enduring. Ms. Bryan’s image certainly meets these criteria.”

The Convention Centre expansion is scheduled for completion by December 2015, by which time the selected image will be incorporated into the façade.
