Council Awards $1.5 Million in Grants and Funds
The City of St. John’s Council has formally approved recipients of Community Grants and the Housing Catalyst Fund for 2019. A total of $1,509,100 has been awarded to community, business, arts and sports organizations and individuals; find details in the background document.
The Housing Catalyst Fund is awarded to business owners and community groups that facilitate and plan housing solutions to enhance quality of life for individuals and families.
“Affordable housing is a crucial part of creating an inclusive city for everyone,” said Councillor Hope Jamieson, Chair of the Affordable Housing Working Group. “The Housing Catalyst Fund supports the creation of innovative affordable housing projects in our city as we move toward a vision of a place where everyone has a safe, affordable place to live.”
Housing Catalyst Fund Recipients for 2019:
- First Light NL - Concept and consultation work to develop affordable supportive housing
- Fresh Fruit & Architecture - Creating a catalogue of building envelope assemblies to support reduced cost and increased energy efficiency in affordable housing development
- Future Housing Co-operative Society Limited - Energy efficiency upgrade for affordable housing units
- Yorabode - Design work for the construction of affordable rental dwellings
The City of St. John's community grants and subsidies program provides financial resources to non-profit groups, organizations and individuals whose programming supports the City’s strategic directions.
“Our goal through the grants program is to actively encourage the growth and stability of non-profit groups and organizations that contribute to the general well-being of residents and the community,” explained Councillor Jamie Korab, lead councillor for Community Services. “It is our hope that this financial support will help with projects that benefit our community.”
Community capital grants have also been awarded in the form of direct cash grants and waiving of permits fees for local non-profit groups and organizations seeking financial assistance to construct, expand and/or renovate a facility that meets a recreational, cultural or community need.
