Mayor Dennis O’Keefe, Chair of the Cruise St. John’s Committee, is pleased to announce the cruise season begins today, Monday, June 2 with Adventure Canada’s Sea Adventurer.

“This first ship marks the start of a very promising cruise season for the city,” said Mayor Dennis O’Keefe. “We are expecting 22 ship visits this season which will bring in more than 36,000 passengers and crew, an 89 per cent increase over 2013. The cruise industry continues to grow stronger each season as our city’s reputation for top notch hospitality and unique cultural experiences bring more and more cruise lines to our friendly harbour.”

The first cruise ship of the season holds extra meaning this year as Adventure Canada is also celebrating its 20th anniversary of sailing to St. John’s. The Sea Adventurer carrying 118 passengers and 72 crew begins its cruise in St. John’s and will circumnavigate the island of Newfoundland, ending its cruise on June 12. The Sea Adventurer has four visits scheduled for this season including a special departure ceremony on June 28 in St. John’s in celebration of its anniversary.

The 2014 cruise season will also see four inaugural ship visits include the Regal Princess, Ruby Princess, Legend of the Seas and the Insignia. Royal Caribbean will include St. John’s as part of a new Canadian itinerary which begins in Quebec City. Holland America, National Geographic (Lindblad Expeditions), AIDA, Silversea, Phoenix Reisen, and other cruise lines will also be making calls to St. John’s over the next few months.
