Thank you to City residents who participated in the 2016 leaf collection program; we collected almost 200 tonnes of leaves in paper yard waste bags, which was an 80 per cent increase over the amount collected in 2015.

The City is once again encouraging environmentally-friendly options for the handling of grass clippings and leaves:

Mulch with a mower
This is the most convenient and environmentally sound way for you to handle your leaves and grass clippings.

Use a compost bin
Grass clippings and leaves can be placed in your backyard composting bin. You keep them to reap the benefits.

Curbside collection by appointment – May 15 to December 1
If you have too much material to mulch, place grass and leaves in paper yard waste bags. There is no limit to the number of paper bags you can place at the curb. Collection takes place by appointment only.

Book an appointment up to 3 pm on the day before your garbage collection day:

  • Online – curbitstjohns.ca
  • St. John’s Waste and Recycling App
  • By calling 311 or 754-CITY (2489)

Grass clippings and leaves in paper bags will be composted. Those in plastic bags are treated as garbage and will not be composted or collected through the appointment program.

Drop off
Bring grass clippings and leaves to the Robin Hood Bay Residential Drop Off, 340 East White Hills Road, from Tuesday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Grass clippings and leaves must be in paper yard waste bags to be accepted for composting. Please notify the attendant if you are dropping off yard waste.
