On July 2, 2014 at a regular meeting of Council, Envision St. John’s Municipal Plan was tabled for public review and discussion.

A municipal plan review process was initiated in 2012. Multiple public consultations and forums were conducted over a three month period, followed by a comprehensive analytical and developmental period that has resulted in the presentation of a new, draft plan.

“This document strikes the balance between development expansion and capacity, growth and stability, and quantity and quality,” explained Councillor Tom Hann, Chair of the Standing Committee on Planning and Development. “There is recognition and respect for the character and form of existing neighbourhoods, and strong policies for the development of new neighbourhoods. The focus throughout is on ‘complete streets’ and neighbourhood planning.”

Throughout the summer and into the fall, the City will share the draft plan with multiple stakeholders, including advisory committees of Council, and the public will have the opportunity to provide comments and share opinions.

“We will ensure that the vision of our City presented in this document is vision that is shared with our residents,” said Mayor Dennis O’Keefe. “We look forward to sharing this document with the public in meetings, at events and through social media.”

Councillor Hann agrees that public awareness and understanding will be important if the plan is to effectively finalized for provincial approval. “Throughout the consultation process we heard often that our residents want an improved quality of municipal life in a healthy, livable city that is diverse, accessible and progressive,” he stated. “I truly believe that this document is reflective of what our people want and what this City needs to grow, evolve and become the City we imagine it can and should be.”

The full plan as well as summary documents are available on the City’s website. Public information sessions are being planned for the fall.
