Infrastructure Funded Through Capital Works Program

Monday, September 10, 2012 - 5:30 AM

The City of St. John's and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador announced funding today for a number of projects through a multi-year capital works funding agreement.

"We are pleased to see the province commit to this two-year infrastructure funding program with the City on a 50-50 cost shared basis," says Mayor Dennis O'Keefe. "The City of St. John's is experiencing a period of unprecedented growth and with growth comes increasing pressure on municipal infrastructure, which we hope to continue to address with the support of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador."

The infrastructure funding will support the following projects (in approximate figures):

  • Street rehabilitation - $14.7 million
  • Public Works Depot renovations - $6.3 million
  • Craigmiller Avenue Sanitary Sewer - $6 million
  • Southlands Community Centre - $3 million
  • Sidewalk Replacement - $2 million
  • Non-Profit Housing - $500,000
  • Retaining Wall Rehabilitation - $740,000
  • Bridge Rehabilitation - $730,000
  • Outdoor Pool Security Fencing - $200,000
  • East White Hills Guide Rail - $55,000

"The City has a significant list of infrastructure projects that need to be addressed and this funding will address some of our critical needs over the next two years," says Ward 1 Councillor Danny Breen, Chair of the Finance and Administration Standing Committee. "Our goal as a City is to always try and find that balance between supporting our aging and expanding municipal infrastructure needs, while being prudent and fiscally responsible with the tax dollars we receive from residents and businesses. As a municipality we rely on these cost-shared programs with the provincial and federal governments and multi-year capital works programs allow us to plan properly for the future of our City."
