Leaves Must be in Paper Bags, Beginning October

Yard Waste Garbage and Recycling at Curb

Beginning in October, leaves placed at the curb for pick up must be in paper yard waste bags.

From Monday, Oct. 2 to Friday, Dec. 1, leaves in paper yard waste bags will be collected on the same day as garbage pick-up in each area and do not count toward the 10 garbage bag limit.

Leaves in plastic bags will not be collected and will be left at the curbside.

Given the economic and environmental costs of landfilling wastes, the City of St. John’s is committed to diverting materials away from the landfill when feasible. Leaves in paper yard waste bags will be composted and used in future landscaping projects.

RONA stores in the St. John’s metro area are supporting this initiative by offering a ‘Buy One, Get One’ coupon for paper yard waste bags. Coupons are available at RONA locations.

Leaves can also be dropped off at the Residential Drop Off at Robin Hood Bay, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesdays to Saturdays.

Residents are encouraged to first choose more environmentally friendly and economically prudent methods of leaf disposal including mulching with a mower, adding leaves directly to gardens, flower beds, or backyard compost bins.

More details about leaf disposal and collection can be found at curbitstjohns.ca/leaves.
