The Loop at Bannerman Park Now Open to the Public

Thursday, December 18, 2014 - 9:15 AM

The much anticipated Loop at Bannerman Park is officially opened to the public for the 2014-15 season.  Weather permitting; The Loop will remain open for the duration of the winter.

“I am very pleased to announce that the incredibly popular Loop at Bannerman Park is now open for residents to enjoy throughout the holiday season,” said Councillor Jonathan Galgay, Chair of the Public Works Standing Committee.  “As this is the second year that The Loop is open for the holidays, I hope that skating The Loop becomes a Christmas tradition for years to come.”

The Loop ice trail is not a standard skating rink.  Rather it loops through the centre of Bannerman Park and offers a unique skating experience in the heart of the city. It is designed for leisurely skating and is family-friendly. Lighting will also allow it to be used in the evenings. The infrastructure for The Loop was constructed at a cost of $1.8 million and was cost shared 50-50 by the Bannerman Park Foundation and the City of St. John’s.

It is critical that residents and visitors use The Loop in accordance with rules and regulations, so that all skaters can get the most out of the season ahead.  Skating on the ice after hours or during maintenance can severely damage the ice trail.

To determine whether or not The Loop is open, and for hours of operation, please call The Loop Line at 733-LOOP (5667).

“We kindly ask members of the public to respect the posted signs,” said Councillor Galgay. “The Loop is a unique feature to our city and I look forward to joining residents during the holidays, and throughout the season, as they enjoy what our beautiful City has to offer.”
