Naming Ceremony in Bowring Park
Today, the Bowring Park Foundation and the City of St. John’s are pleased to honour two extraordinary individuals in a naming ceremony. The newly constructed pool house will be named in honour of Susan Harvey Patten and the Bowring Park splash pad will be dedicated to Nevaeh Denine.
“Mrs. Susan Patten and Ms. Nevaeh Denine are two wonderful examples of commitment to our community and exemplify the spirit of volunteerism,” said Bowring Park Foundation Chair, Ashley Power-Stack. “These two deserving individuals symbolize that whether you are 8 years old, or over 80 years old, everyone can make a positive impact in our city and province.”
“The City of St. John’s is a better place because of contributions of individuals like Mrs. Patten and Nevaeh Denine,” said Mayor Danny Breen. “We are humbled to dedicate our pool house and splash pad after two special members of our community who inspire us to give back.”
Mrs. Susan Patten, in her 85th year, is an exceptional businesswoman and the Chair of the A. Harvey Group of Companies. Perhaps even more inspiring is the outstanding volunteer leadership Mrs. Patten has demonstrated throughout her life. Among many other roles, Mrs. Patten is a member of the advisory board of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, a lifetime Girl Guides member and former Treasurer of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts and was the chair of fundraising appeals for the Canadian Mental Health Association and the Salvation Army. Mrs. Patten is a member of the Order of Canada and the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador, has been awarded the Red Cross NL Humanitarian award, was inducted into the NL Volunteer Hall of Fame, and is included in the list of Canada’s 100 Most Powerful Women. Mrs. Patten’s lifetime of service is a story we hope will inspire women and men of all ages to be kind and generous with their time and spirit.
Ms. Nevaeh Denine was a little girl with a big heart and when life gave her lemons, she made lemonade. While Nevaeh was battling neuroblastoma, a form of childhood cancer, she with the support of her mother, Holly, and large group of family, friends and volunteers, created “the biggest lemonade-stand ever” as a way to give back to her community. Since 2014, Nevaeh’s lemonade stand has raised over $160,000 and assisted children with pediatric cancer throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. On August 6, 2018, Nevaeh lost her battle with neuroblastoma, but her legacy lives on. Her kindness and generosity has proven to be contagious and she continues to inspire us every day. The City of St. John’s and the Bowring Park Foundation are truly honoured to name the splash pad in honour of Nevaeh Denine.
