On Wednesday, Sept. 21 the City of St. John's and partners will celebrate National Tree Day with a tree planting ceremony and BBQ in Victoria Park beginning at 11 a.m., all are welcome to attend.

National Tree Day is a celebration for Canadians to appreciate the great benefits that trees provide us - clean air, wildlife habitat, reducing energy demand and connecting with nature.

Earlier this year the City launched the Community Roots Tree Planting Program, thanks to a $25,000 grant from Tree Canada and TD Friends of the Environment Foundation. As a result of the program 165 trees were planted in neighbourhoods throughout the City.

In addition, the City plants 400 to 500 trees annually to diversify the urban forest so it is more sustainable and less prone to disease or infestation. Our annual tree planting program provides a balance between native and hardy non-native species suited to our local climate.

National Tree Day is celebrated with partners including Clean St. John’s, Tree Canada, the Bowring Park Foundation, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, Landscape NL, McInnes Cooper, Wildland Associates Limited, and Newfoundland Power.

This event will go ahead rain or shine.
