The City of St. John’s has implemented a business registration process requiring all commercial enterprises and home-based businesses operating in the City (with the exception of mobile and transient vendors) to complete and submit a business registration form.

“In January, the City created a more equitable business tax system by blending the Business Occupancy Tax into the Business Realty Tax,” says Councillor Bruce Tilley, Co-chair of the Economic Development, Tourism and Public Engagement Standing Committee. “With the two taxes blended, the City is very eager to ensure we retain accurate databases about the businesses within our City. The new business registration process will allow us to gather this important information and in turn provide businesses with valuable resources and information on the City and its economy.”

With the move to this one tax, the City no longer conducts assessments on individual business occupancies and, as a result, we no longer record or maintain information specific to the businesses operating in St. John’s.

Businesses can complete and submit a business registration form directly from the City of St. John’s website at www.stjohns.ca. There is no fee associated with registering a business. Businesses will be required to renew their registration on an annual basis.

Registered businesses can receive a listing in the City of St. John’s online business directory, as well as a subscription to a monthly newsletter and other business information updates.

“The business registration process will enable the City to collect some very valuable business information,” says Councillor Tilley. “This data will not only inform our policies and programs, but will also serve as a critical first step in increasing our engagement with the business community.”

Businesses with questions about business registration may contact Access St. John’s at 311 or (709) 754-CITY (2489).
