A proposed new By-Law would place restrictions on fireworks within the City of St. John’s.

Today (Wednesday, May 19), City Council will discuss a By-Law that only allows consumer fireworks on Canada Day and New Year’s Eve; all other firework displays will require a Special Events approval from the City.

The proposed By-Law was requested by members of Council who receive complaints from residents about the disruption that fireworks in residential areas cause, including the impact that fireworks have on animals.

Council will debate the issue at Committee of the Whole. If approved, a Notice of Motion to enact the By-Law will be made on May 31 with a final decision at the Regular Council Meeting on June 7. The By-Law would come into effect December 31, 2021.
