New Pool House for Bowring Park

Wednesday, July 16, 2014 - 8:15 AM

At a special ceremony to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Bowring Park, the City of St. John’s and the Bowring Park Foundation committed to a joint investment of $3.5 million to upgrade the pool house and change rooms in the park.

The City of St. John’s will invest $2.5 million; the Foundation has committed to raising $1million.

“The Bowring Park Pool is an important part of our recreation offerings to the residents of St. John’s,” said Mayor O’Keefe. “Investing in this facility is an investment in our future and in the future viability of this park.”

"Residents of St. John's have enjoyed swimming in Bowring Park since it opened 100 years ago. It seems fitting to make this announcement on such an important occasion," said Michael Power, Chairman of the Bowring Park Foundation. "Upgrading the Park's swimming facilities is one of the major projects identified in our Master Plan. The Bowring Park Foundation is delighted to continue to work with the City of St. John's to enhance beautiful Bowring Park."

At the ceremony, the Bowring Park Foundation also presented the City of St. John’s with a lectern, made from the wood recovered from the Linden tree destroyed by Hurricane Igor in 2010.

“The wood in this lectern came from the tree originally planted at our opening ceremonies 100 years ago today,” explained Mr. Power. “We were so pleased to be able to recover that wood and to use it in this ceremonial way.”

As part of the ceremony, a new tree was planted. “Let us hope that, 100 years from today, our children’s children are standing here, under the leaves of this red oak tree, commemorating the 200th anniversary for Bowring Park,” exclaimed the Mayor.
