The Oceans ’14 conference and exhibition will be making a big splash in the City of St. John’s from September 14-19.

More than 1000 delegates from 36 countries arrive in the City on Sunday for the start of this international event.

“We extend a very warm welcome to the delegates,” said Mayor Dennis O’Keefe. “Oceans’14 is a major event for St. John’s and for the province, and we are proud to be a partner. It provides an unparalleled opportunity to profile our capabilities in ocean technology to a global audience.”

Over 350 technical papers will be presented at Oceans ’14, and 150 companies and organizations will exhibit their products and services at Mile One Centre.

“The opportunities Oceans’14 presents for business development and the further growth and expansion of the ocean technology sector are immense,” explained Councillor Bruce Tilley, chair of the Standing Committee on Economic Development, Tourism and Public Engagement. “As this conference is one of the most comprehensive ocean science and engineering gatherings in North America and since the spotlight is on St. John’s this year, we felt that it would be fitting to proclaim Oceans’ Week at this time.”

This is the City’s twelfth annual Oceans’ Week, beginning with a proclamation at the regular Council meeting on Monday, September 15.

“The oceans sector is an important part of our growing economy,” said Mayor O’Keefe. “Oceans’ Week highlights the important work being undertaken here in oceans-related industries and helps promote St. John’s as a City of Ocean Excellence.”
