Today, representatives from the City of St. John’s and the provincial Government of Newfoundland and Labrador joined community members from Wedgewood Park to celebrate the official grand opening of the new Paul Reynolds Community Centre.

“Today marks a very historic day for the City of St. John’s and especially for the Paul Reynolds family and community members of Wedgewood Park for which this building has been named,” said Mayor Dennis O’Keefe. “This new, modern and energy efficient facility will serve as a community hub, learning centre and fun space for the young and the young at heart for many years to come.”

The total cost of the facility is approximately $32 million of which the provincial Government has provided $4 million.

The facility is named after the late Paul Reynolds who was Mayor of the Town of Wedgewood Park prior to amalgamation with the City of St. John’s in 1992. Mr. Reynolds served on St. John’s City Council and was a lifelong advocate for his community. Through committed volunteer and private sector involvement he held various roles which directly benefitted Wedgewood Park.

“I thank the community of Wedgewood Park for their patience and cooperation throughout the construction phase of this project,” said Ward 1 Councillor Danny Breen. “This wonderful new centre is an asset to the community as it will serve not only the residents of St. John’s, but the entire North East Avalon.”

Details about the facility and biographies about those who are named in the new community centre can be found in the backgrounder attached.
