Mary Dalton at CHMR-FM recording her Poetry Podcast

Poet Laureate Mary Dalton has partnered with 93.5 CHMR-FM to create and produce a poetry podcast called Flahoolic. Several episodes are currently available, with more scheduled for release in the coming weeks. They feature Dalton’s poems along with those of a few other St. John’s poets, past and present. Additional episodes are in production and focus on particular themes in Dalton’s poetry such as nature, the city and gender relations.

“I am delighted our Poet Laureate has taken the initiative to partner with CHMR-FM to create the Flahoolic podcast,” said Councillor Maggie Burton, Council Representative on the Arts and Culture Advisory Committee. “Since Mary began her tenure as the City’s Poet Laureate she has been working tirelessly to make poetry more accessible to the people of St. John’s, and this podcast is just her latest effort in that direction.”

“The word flahoolic has roots in the Irish language; one of its meaning given in the Dictionary of Newfoundland English is that of being overly generous,” says Dalton. “It seemed an apt word to suggest the abundance of poetry in St. John’s, and it has a delicious mouth feel – its own music.”

According to Dalton the aim of Flahoolic is to provide poetry of St. John’s in its ideal form: as sound. “Poetry,” she says, “is essentially word-music that carries so many facets of our world.”

Listen to Flahoolic through your favourite podcast app, or search Flahoolic on Soundcloud. As new episodes are released they will also be posted to 93.5 CHMR-FM and City of St. John’s social media.

“As a campus and community radio station, CHMR-FM supports and promotes local arts and culture through a variety of radio programs and podcasts, and we’re delighted to partner with the City’s Poet Laureate to produce Flahoolic,” says Hans Rollmann, Program Director at CHMR-FM.
