Portugal Cove Road Water Main Work resumes

Friday, April 25, 2014 - 6:30 AM

The City of St. John’s is pleased to announce that the Portugal Cove Road Water Transmission Main Replacement Project has resumed. Phase 1 of the project, from Newfoundland Drive to New Cove Road, was started in late fall, 2013. Construction for the 2014 season has now resumed.

Northbound traffic along Portugal Cove Road - from MacDonald Drive to London Road – has been reduced to a single lane. Traffic detours along Portugal Cove Road may be required in the future as the work proceeds.  Motorists should expect delays and may want to consider taking alternate routes where possible.

“The residents living in this neighbourhood have struggled with increasing and recurring water line breaks,” explained Ward 1 Councillor Danny Breen. “Some residents have experienced property damage and there is often a tear-up in the area to accommodate repairs. This work, while extensive, will eliminate that and bring our system up-to-date.”

Council has committed a total of $13.6M for the replacement of the water transmission mains along Portugal Cove Road from Newfoundland Drive to Rawlins Cross. Phase 1is being completed by Coady Construction and Excavating Limited, and will continue until early fall 2014.

Phase 2 of this project will extend along Portugal Cove Road from New Cove Road to 1st Avenue and will be tendered this summer.
