Portuguese Naval Ship to Visit St. John's

Thursday, August 15, 2013 - 2:00 PM

The Dom Carlos I, a Portuguese naval research vessel, will arrive in St. John’s the morning of Friday, Aug. 16. The Dom Carlos I is undertaking a fisheries inspection mission in the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO) zone off the Grand Banks and will remain in port until Aug. 18.

On Friday, Aug. 16 at 11 a.m. a naval delegation from the vessel will lay a wreath in the Mount Carmel Cemetery at the grave of deceased White Fleet fisherman Dionisiv Esteves who died on the Grand Banks in 1966. The wreath laying ceremony will be presided by the Most Reverend Martin W. Currie, Archbishop of St. John’s.

Immediately following the wreath laying ceremony a short visit to the Shrine of our Lady of Fatima at the Basilica Cathedral of St. John the Baptist will take place. The nine statues that comprise the Shrine of our Lady of Fatima were a gift to the Basilica and the people of St. John’s from the White Fleet officers and crew and the Portuguese people.

Commanding Officer Pedro De Almeida invites the public to attend these ceremonies, as well as an open house of the Dom Carlos I on Saturday, Aug. 17 from 10 a.m. to noon and from 3 to 5 p.m. The vessel will be docked at Pier 8, which is opposite the Scotia Centre.
