Proposed Cell Tower on McLoughlan Street

Thursday, August 29, 2013 - 10:30 AM

The City of St. John’s has serious concerns with the approach taken by Bell Mobility with respect to its proposed cell phone tower near McLoughlan Street.

“Bell Mobility is aware that the City is in the process of developing a cell phone tower siting protocol,” says Mayor Dennis O’Keefe. “Bell Mobility provided comments in a letter to us dated July 26, 2013. I feel that Bell Mobility should defer any further action pending finalization of the City’s protocol.”

“Given that Bell Mobility will eventually have to work with the City for a permit to erect a tower, we would recommend that any further action be deferred until the City’s protocol is finalized, and a meaningful consultation takes place,” advises the Mayor.

The City understands that cell phone towers are technically within federal jurisdiction, but the City’s authority should also be respected by service providers. Bell Mobility should work with the City and respect the feelings and concerns of residents.
