Recycle Cardboard During #DeBoxingDays

Again this year the City of St. John’s is encouraging residents to recycle cardboard that accompanies holiday shopping and gift giving.
 
From December 11, 2017 to January 6, 2018 residents are encouraged to put cardboard, bundled or in blue bags, at the curb on their recycling days.

Pictures of cardboard put out for curbside recycling that are posted on social media using the hashtag #DeboxingDays will be entered in a contest draw for a North Atlantic gift card. Anyone recycling cardboard at the Robin Hood Bay Residential Drop Off during this period will receive a ballot.

Last year’s #DeboxingDays was a great success and saw 48 per cent more cardboard received by the City over the same period in the previous year. This year the #DeboxingDays campaign is extended by two weeks to include the time frame when many gifts in cardboard packaging are purchased.

Recycling cardboard benefits the environment and the economy. The fees charged to commercial waste haulers, which includes the City of St. John’s, to dump garbage are more than three times higher than recycling fees. Cardboard is a high-valuable commodity for resale through recycling programs which reduces the cost of operations at Robin Hood Bay.
