Residents can Access Tree Grant Through ‘Residential Re-Leaf’

This year the City is launching ‘Residential Re-Leaf’.  Through this program, homeowners within the City of St. John’s can apply for a $150 voucher towards the purchase of a tree to plant on their property. 

“This initiative will help the City in achieving its goal of enhancing the existing urban forest by planting trees in residential areas throughout the city,” said Councillor Ian Froude, lead for Public Works. “We are also pleased that the program will help to educate people on the benefits urban trees provide and raise awareness of the importance of planting and protecting trees in our city.”

St. John’s is fortunate in that it has many tree-lined streets and an abundance of greenspace.  There are, however, many areas in the city where tree cover is sparse.  In these instances, there is often little to no City-owned land available to plant trees. The Residential Re-Leaf program aims to enhance the streetscape and increase the presence of trees in these areas by encouraging property owners to plant trees on their property.  

Residents wishing to participate in the program can apply either in-person, through regular mail, email or online. Applications will be processed on a first come first served basis and must be received by May 17, 2019. Applicants will be responsible for attending a tree care information session with the City’s Municipal Arborist to learn about planting and maintaining the tree on their property.

In 2016, in partnership with Tree Canada and TD Green Streets, the City of St. John’s initiated a similar planting program, Community Roots.  Through this program 161 trees were planted on residential properties throughout the city.  It is anticipated that this current opportunity will further assist in enhancing St. John’s urban forest and improving the city’s overall environmental sustainability.
