RNC Charges Individuals for Illegal Dumping

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) has laid charges against a number of individuals under Section 16 of the Environmental Protection Act as a result of a joint operation between the City and the RNC for illegal dumping in the City of St. John’s, NL.
 
The City of St. John’s has installed surveillance equipment to record and capture individuals illegally dumping in numerous locations. Once photography, notes and other materials are compiled into a comprehensive file, the materials are turned over as part of an official complaint to the RNC.
 
To date, after lengthy investigation into the incidents, a number of individuals were charged. The charges are as follows:

  • 17 year old St. John’s male charged with S. 16 (a) of the Environmental Protection Act.
  • 18 year old St. John’s male charged with S. 16 (a) of the Environmental Protection Act.
  • 29 year old St. John’s male charged with S. 16 (a) of the Environmental Protection Act.
  • 29 year old Portugal Cove- St. Phillips male charged with S. 16 (a) of the Environmental Protection Act.
  • 37 year old Conception Bay South male charged with S. 356(1)(c) of the Criminal Code of Canada, S.49 of the Canada Post Act and S. 16 (a) of the Environmental Protection Act.

 
“The City of St. John’s has made it very easy for individuals to get rid of items they no longer want - from bulk garbage pick-up to a streamlined, clean and accessible residential drop-off at Robin Hood Bay, but despite our best efforts individuals persist in dumping illegally,” said Mayor Dennis O’Keefe at a joint press conference today. “We want those people to know, we are adopting a zero tolerance policy towards illegal dumping in our city. If you do it, you will get caught and we will make a complaint to the RNC.”

The RNC are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed illegal dumping or have information pertaining to such incidents is asked to contact the RNC at 729-8000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). You can also provide information anonymously on the NL Crime Stoppers Website at www.nlcrimestoppers.com.

The RNC will continue to work in partnership with the City of St. John’s to prevent illegal dumping.
