Sanitary Sewer Testing in Goulds Next Week

Wednesday, June 21, 2017 - 4:30 PM
Map Area in Goulds for sewer testing

Starting on Tuesday, June 27 until June 30 the City of St. John’s will be conducting sanitary sewer vapour testing in Goulds. Testing is required in order to locate areas of the sewer system that need updating. Work is scheduled along Main Road from Doyle’s Road to Heffernan’s Line. See full list of streets attached.

Testing will be conducted by the City’s Environmental Services Division. A large fan is placed over manholes in the street to blow artificially produced, non-toxic water vapor into the sewer system. Staff then walk the street and onto properties to record locations where smoke is observed exiting the system.

Water vapour is not harmful to humans, pets, or plants, and will not stain clothing, drapes, or furniture. It may make you cough, as any vapour can be an irritant. If vapour enters into your home, exit your home immediately and notify the City staff in the area, or call Access St. John’s at 311 or 754-CITY.

The vapour should not enter your home unless there is a deficiency within the plumbing system of your residence. If the vapour enters your home is could be the result of:
• Damaged, or improper plumbing
• Infrequently used drains that have dried out over time
• Uncapped piping rough-ins

There will not be any service interruptions as a result of the vapour test. For more details about this work please read the FAQ document attached.
