The City of St. John’s is pleased to announce that Sharron Callahan is the winner of the 3rd annual Senior of the Year Award.

The award, which is a partnership with Kenny’s Pond Retirement Community, honours a local senior who has made significant contributions to the City through service to the community or by improving the quality of life for citizens through community involvement.

Sharron Callahan was nominated for the award by Dr. Edgar R. Williams, chair of the St. John’s Chapter of the Canadian Association of Retired Persons (CARP), for her hard work and dedication to seniors, youth and everything in between.

As busy as Mrs. Callahan was in her career, she has always made time to volunteer.

“I will outline some of the reasons why Sharron is deserving of this award,” says her nomination form. “She is the most reliable and hard-working volunteer that I know and if you want something done, just ask Sharron.”

The Mayor’s Advisory Committee on Seniors, who reviewed all of the nominations and selected a winner for the award, continue to be impressed by the quality of the nominations for the award.

“We are extremely pleased that the public is coming forward to share these stories of amazing seniors who are giving back so much to our community,” says Allan Miller, Chair of the Mayor’s Advisory Committee on Seniors. “We are very proud to announce that Sharron Callahan is our winner. Her commitment to not only St. John’s, but the entire country, makes her an exemplary example to all St. John’s.”

Mrs. Callahan’s list of volunteer activities is impressive and includes work in a wide variety of community service sectors as well.

“Mrs. Callahan is a very worthy recipient of this award for all she has done for the City of St. John’s,” says Councillor at Large Tom Hann, Council representative on the Mayor’s Advisory Committee on Seniors. “Not only does she volunteer her time to these organizations but she also takes on leadership roles to make a difference in our community. She is a very impressive nominee and we are thrilled to present her with this award.”

The City is delighted that for the third year in a row, Kenny’s Pond Retirement Community has agreed to sponsor the award and we look forward to a continued relationship with them on the Senior of the Year Award program.

“We are honored to be partnered with the City of St. John’s on the Senior of the Year Award again this year,” says Amanda Kinsman, Marketing and Community Relations Manager of Kenny’s Pond Retirement Community. “This award is a very special representation of the invaluable work that volunteers put into our communities. It also symbolizes passion and respect for the senior population. Congratulations to Mrs. Callahan for her determined efforts in helping to improve citizen’s health and well-being.”
