Signal Damage Will Impact Morning Commute

Sunday, March 12, 2017 - 4:30 PM

City crews have been out since 5:30 a.m. addressing issues with damaged traffic signals. The first priority was to remove hanging, dangerous signals; the replacement process began late Sunday afternoon but with more than 70 intersections impacted, this process will take some time.

Over 140 signals were damaged during the weekend storm; some of these can be repaired and others will need to be replaced.

City staff have identified a list of high priority intersections and have been in communications with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary for support, especially during the commute periods.

The City and other government offices will stagger start times to decrease pressure in the morning, but the public are advised to proceed with extreme caution, especially in school zones where pedestrian walk lights may also be out of service.
