SJRFD: Consumer Fireworks Program

Friday, December 06, 2019 - 7:15 AM

The St. John’s Regional Fire Department (SJRFD) wishes to advise the public that the Consumer Fireworks Program requires all vendors who sell fireworks in St. John’s, Mount Pearl, Paradise, Petty Harbour/Maddox Cove and Logy Bay/Middle Cove/Outer Cove, to have persons on staff that are certified to sell consumer fireworks.

The purchaser is required to complete an application form before purchasing any fireworks. The application form is to be filled out at the place of purchase.

These certified persons will be responsible to verify that they have instructed the purchaser to:

  • Clearly read all the instructions on each firework ahead of time.
  • Check wind speed and direction to ensure any fireworks fallout will land away from spectators and not endanger surrounding property.
  • Check the recommended clearances by the manufacturer of the purchased fireworks.
  • Have buckets of water, a fire extinguisher or a hose nearby.
  • Issue a “Consumer Fireworks Instruction Brochure” to the purchaser

In addition, consumers will be required to complete a brief Consumer Fireworks Purchaser form at the time of purchase. The information required to be filled out will include items such as:

  • Name and address
  • Address of where the fireworks are to be fired
  • Verify that they have the required clearances as identified by the vendor
  • Verify that the vendor has explained the requirements to safely set off fireworks and that they clearly understand these requirements

The SJRFD would like all citizens to have a safe and happy holiday season!
