The City of St. John’s, with support from Tree Canada, is celebrating National Forest Week (September 20 to 26) and the 10-year anniversary of National Tree Day on September 23.

This week, an outdoor tree planting ceremony is taking place at Kenmount Terrace Community Centre Park and includes students from Larkall Academy, representatives from City Council, Tree Canada, the Bowring Park Foundation, Clean St. John’s, Newfoundland Power and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.

St. Teresa’s School and St. Paul’s Elementary are also celebrating National Tree Day by planting fruit-bearing trees and shrubs on property surrounding the schools, with funding provided by Tree Canada. The City’s municipal arborist will be on hand to provide educational information and tree-planting guidance for students at each school.

The City recognizes and thanks many community organizations and groups that are celebrating National Tree Day, including Food First NL and the residents of Tessier Park.

National Tree Day is an opportunity for Canadians to appreciate the great benefits that trees provide us - clean air, wildlife habitat, reducing energy demand and connecting with nature.
