Statement of Condolence on the Passing of John Crosbie

On behalf of the residents of St. John’s, City Council members and staff, I would like to extend deepest sympathies to the family of the late John Crosbie.

Mr. Crosbie was certainly one of the province’s most influential political figures; he played a seminal role in two of the most important events in Newfoundland’s recent history – the cod moratorium and the start of the province’s oil industry.

Mr. Crosbie was first elected to public office in 1965, serving as Deputy Mayor for the City of St. John’s until July 1966 when he resigned to move to provincial politics. He is one of a very select few who served the people of St. John’s and the province at the municipal, provincial and federal level before finishing a long and influential political career as the province’s Lieutenant Governor. 

He will be remembered as always passionate, often controversial, and ever dedicated to serving the people of St. John’s, the province and the country.

Flags will be flown at half-mast at City Hall to honour Mr. Crosbie and our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this difficult time.
