Talks Reach an Impasse in Metrobus Labour Negotiations

Today, Councillor Dave Lane, Council representative on the St. John’s Transportation Commission, announced that discussions between Metrobus and the union representing drivers and maintenance employees have reached an impasse.

Both sides have been working with the help of a conciliator but have not been able to reach a new collective agreement.

"We appreciate the union are looking for the best deal for their members, and we have been exploring options in a way that ensures sustainability of the service for the long term,” said Councillor Dave Lane. “Employees are compensated well, and the offer being made to employees is fair and consistent with the offer accepted by other City unions.”

Increased funding for public transit was made by the City in the 2020 Budget, based on recommendations coming from the Public Transit Review report, released in November 2019. City

Council is committed to improving public transit, while ensuring costs are managed effectively for riders and taxpayers.  

“We are heading into some tough budget years, and we need to ensure the long-term sustainability of public transit in St. John’s,” said Councillor Lane.

The St. John’s Transportation Commission, operating as Metrobus, has been providing public transit services in St. John’s since 1958. Metrobus operates 22 fixed-transit routes, five of which are wheelchair accessible, and services more than three million rides annually.
