Ocean Week: Making a Big Splash

The eleventh annual Ocean Week is taking place in St. John’s from September 29 to October 5 and is highlighted by three international oceans-related conferences.

The World Seafood Congress being held in St. John’s for the first time is hosted by the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland and began on September 28.

The Arctic Shipping Forum North America Conference organized by Informa Maritime Events returns to St. John’s on October 2 and 3.

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Technical Committee for Arctic Operations event will meet in St. John’s on October 2 and 3.

“We would like to extend a very warm welcome to the delegates from all over the world visiting St. John’s for these events,” said Councillor Bruce Tilley, chair of Economic Development and Tourism Standing Committee. “The oceans sector is an important part of our growing economy and Ocean Week highlights the important work being undertaken here and helps promote St. John’s as a City of Ocean Excellence.”

On Tuesday evening, October 1 at 7 p.m., well known Newfoundland author Jim Wellman will read from his new book Sea Folk at the A. C. Hunter Public Library, Arts and Culture Centre. Admission is free but the public is asked to register in advance by calling (709) 737-3950.
