Traffic Calming Pilot Projects for 2018

Wednesday, February 14, 2018 - 3:45 PM

Today, Council’s Committee of the Whole voted for approval-in-principle on six proposed traffic pilot projects for 2018:

Rawlins Cross – Unsignalized Traffic Circulation
Freshwater Road at Pennywell Road, Cookstown Road, and Field Street – Guide Islands
Military Road at Bannerman Park – Curb Extension at existing Crosswalk
Ladysmith Drive and Kiwanis Street – Curb Extension and new Crosswalk
Terra Nova Road and Wishingwell Road – Curb Extensions
Tree Top Drive – Neighbourhood Street Art Painting

Details on each of the proposed projects is available on the City’s website. City Council will vote on final approval during an upcoming City Council meeting.

“The City’s Transportation Engineering division is piloting traffic improvements again this year to test potential long-term traffic improvements at problematic locations,” explained Councillor Debbie Hanlon, lead on Transportation.

In 2017 the City completed traffic pilot projects at three locations to test possible infrastructure improvements with goals of improving road safety, traffic flow, and other community concerns.

“Public opinion is a vital component of evaluating these pilots,” said Councillor Hanlon. “An engagement strategy to gather input will be developed and a report submitted to Council that summarizes the results and provides recommendations for permanent traffic improvements.”
